Odin is a large male white Bengal Tiger. He is six years old and lives at the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA. His trainer has taught the 10' tiger to dive into water to retrieve bits of meat, and now has a real affinity for swimming.

"White tigers - the colour is caused by an unusual genetic combination - are rare in the wild, although there are several dozen in zoos.

Odin was hand-raised at the zoo. And after he was weaned, his British trainer Lee Munro discovered his remarkable skill: when a lump of meat was thrown into a pool of water, Odin would happily dive in after it.

In fact, although Big Cats generally do not like water, tigers of all types have been spotted taking to the water to hunt and even to bathe for pleasure.

Odin can now be observed in action - a large pool with glass walls has been constructed at the zoo to allow visitors to watch him gliding through the water with all the grace of a polar bear.

Tragically, within our lifetimes, zoos might be the only places left to see these magnificent animals.

A century ago there were about 100,000 tigers in the wild. Now there are just 2,500 adults, with the Bengal variety almost extinct."

the Bonnacon is a medieval beast with a head like a bull and horns that curve in towards each other. because the horns are useless for defense, the bonnacon is able to expel burning dung that is able to travel as far as two acres. as described by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia,

"There are reports of a wild animal in Paionia called the bonasus, which has the mane of a horse, but in all other respects resembles a bull; its horns are curved back in such a manner as to be of no use for fighting, and it is said that because of this it saves itself by running away, meanwhile emitting a trail of dung that sometimes covers a distance of as much as three furlongs [604 m], contact with which scorches pursuers like a sort of fire."

As a fantasy creature, the bonnacon is often described as being a large four-legged dragon-like creature with turned-back horns and thick armor. It produces the same burning waste from its rear Pliny reported, along with similarly caustic breath, so that neither end is safe.

FRIED CALAMARI
Recipe courtesy The Food Network

Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
1 pound clean squid with tentacles, bodies cut into 1/3- to 1/2-inch-thick rings
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons dried parsley
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 lemons, cut into wedges
1 cup simple tomato sauce, recipe follows or jarred marinara sauce, warmed
Pour enough oil into a heavy large saucepan to reach the depth of 3 inches. Heat over medium heat to 350 degrees F. Mix the flour, parsley, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Working in small batches, toss the squid into the flour mixture to coat. Carefully add the squid to the oil and fry until crisp and very pale golden, about 1 minute per batch. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, transfer the fried calamari to a paper-towel lined plate to drain.
Place the fried calamari and lemon wedges on a clean plate. Sprinkle with salt. Serve with the marinara sauce.

so it's the beginning of the week and you know what that means... ANIMAL OF THE WEEK! (i realize i amuse only myself).

this week feels fat so there are TWO animals. lucky, lucky! they look the same though.

in the spirit of Valentine's Day, may i introduce the AFRICAN WILD ASS. she's a hardy animal which is well adapted to desert life in northeast ethiopia and somalia. able to sustain water loss up to 30% of her body weight, she can also drink enough water in 2-5 minutes to restore fluid loss. kind of like a Warcraft pet. anyway... this species of ass was domesticated about 6,000 years ago, and is mentioned frequently in the Bible. ... although domestic donkeys exist all over the world, only a few hundred of their ancestors survive. populations are decreasing as a result of hunting, competition with livestock for limited desert resources, and hybridization with the domestic donkey. also the embarrassment of their name in modern times.

a relative to the Wild Ass, the ONAGER is one of the largest species of the asiatic variety, living only in iran. he is the switest of all equids, with recorded running speeds up to 70km/h. similar to the African Ass, this species lives in dry, semi-desert regions which are hot in the day and cool at night. due to all the problems in the middle east, onagers are now found in just two protected areas, yet still at risk from poachers.
